Match report
The Bury 2’s recorded their first win of the season with an emphatic performance against Letchworth 5’s at home. Alex had the benefit of a very strong line-up and much strategic debate ensued about whether we should bat first or chase under lights. All of this was rendered completely useless as Prezzo lost his 4th toss in a row. The oppo decided to have a bat & with an a couple of old heads, numerous small boys and even a female in the species in their ranks early wickets were very much in order.
Jim Beckett, making his 2’s debut this season, sparked the game alight with his second ball. Treated with disdain by their opener who had a swipe and was excellently taken by Rymer in the gully for a classier than the average Div 11 dismissal. King Kev kept it customarily tight at the other end. Jimbo’s 2nd came courtesy of a looping catch at point by Smurf. Immediately before this was a similar looping chance which headed towards Smurf who leapt like a salmon. Unfortunately this was a premature salmon and Smurf had more than enough time to hang in the air, land, and still have another jump up to catch it!
Smurf then came onto bowl excited by the prospect of a young middle order. Following some ‘coaching’ from Bernard at fine leg he bowled a beauty which seamed, took the edge and was safely pouched behind the stump by Skip – proper seamer’s dismissal. Spongles was introduced around this time, mainly because while he’s bowling we all get a split second of peace and quiet. He bowled in ‘good areas’ and ‘asked questions’ of their lower middle order who wilted under fierce Bury pressure.
The Reverend Smith bamboozled the girl forcing her to chop on but not before she displayed timing better than most of her team mates. Smith and Spongles wiped up the tail as Bury bowled out the oppo in under 30 overs.
An excellent sight (for the bowlers in particular!) was the reappearance of Peter Haigh following a recent illness. It was great to see him out umpiring and we wish him well.
After a delectable tea, including homebaked scones, from the Goodwins, Derek and Tony set about chasing down this small target. All was going to plan as Derek was quickly into double figures with some crunching drives. Then disaster struck. The girl, Little, had the cheek, the nerve and the downright disregard for the game of amateur village cricket by bowling an excellent delivery which straightened and rearranged Del Boy’s stumps! It was at this moment that Derek wrote himself into the players after dinner speeches.
Tony fell shortly after to some pacy bowling from Hartley who had some Bury batsmen (nameless!) hopping around slightly more than others. Tumble and Simon ‘Precious’ Harley then formed a partnership carrying the Bury to within 20 of the target before Simon, uncharacteristically, pulled a very long hop straight down square leg’s throat. With just 2 needed Tumble was clearly feeling similarly generous and donated his wicket having a hoick. Neither Martin or Jim had the hart to hit wining runs kindly allowing the bowler to bowl a head high full toss that went for 2 no balls.
Overall, an excellent performance in the field set up this comfortable victory. If we can maintain availability and a strong side we will rise up the Div 11 league table like oil from a broken rig in the Caribbean. Tumble.
