Southgate Adelaide III v Hertingfordbury CC 2nd XI on Sat 17 Jul 2010 at 1.00
Hertingfordbury CC Won 119 runs

Match report The scoobies paid a visit to the windy Northampton Exiles ground to play Southgate Adelaide, this was just enough to confuse Ranner who was at the main ground, leaving me the old man and Pearcey directing him over the phone, this, and Robs general lateness caused the skipper to have around 6 or 7 men at the ground as the oppo put us into bat. 1 o’clock arrived just as all 11 players did.
So his turtleness and Ranner were sent to combat the new ball. They both started brightly as the cross wind helped Davis move the ball away effectively and Fitzpatrick caused difficulty bringing it in. Despite the testing conditions both openers put away the bad ball well enough to get their deserved runs and both looked to have just got themselves in, as Ranner then edged behind with the score in excess of 40.
Captain Prezzo joined Bernie and summed up the pitch wisely as one “that you never really feel you’re in on” as the ball began to misbehave, springing up from a length and then shooting from one not far away. This variation led to the Bernard’s demise as he could only guide a lifting length ball to the palms of first slip. This bought the ever reliable Simon to the crease, and from here on he and Alex got into their rhythm and the runs started to flow. Despite many attempts by the oppo skipper to lure both batsmen out with numerous bowling changes and multiple field adjustments it all became a touch too easy for the pair to build a huge partnership.
The site of seeing the ball fly to the boundary became all too regular that more interest was shown by the batsmen in wait towards Pearcey’s bon bons, the sweets of course, than the 3 consecutive swept fours Alex hit in one over, no disrespect skipper. The score excelled well in excess of max batting points, and both batsmen to sublime 50’s before Simon uncharacteristically hit a ball in the air within reach of a fielder. William joined Alex as they ran well taking the score in excess of 200, and with 5 and a half over’s left in the innings, Alex lost his middle stump giving William, Myself and Anthony the chance to put on another 30+ between us leaving a very intimidating 234-5 on the board as we were called in with 45 over’s up.

A lovely tea consumed and a quick watch of the entertaining match on the opposite pitch later and we were out to bowl.

Pearcey and I were entrusted with the new ball; we both went quite well, not allowing many scoring opportunities and this frustration of the batsmen lead to a thick outside edge off James being pouched by the reverend at gully. Here on the whole team bought about a bit of a collapse, the other opener departed having kindly dragged on to end my second team wicket drought.
The captain must have been having an inspired day as every bowling change in the first 30 over’s bought about a wicket, Anthony, with new improved run up, did well bowling in tandem with the farmer.
Kevin provided comedy moment of the day as the umpire sorted out some stumps, the batsmen was checking his guard, keeper and slips were having a conversation, and no fielders were truly concentrating. Kev took the opportunity to get a sneaky dot ball in, bowling his first delivery as no-one paid attention. From there it got a bit tidier and regular as his rhythm proved unbreakable returning 3 scalps in his 7 over spell. Rob joined in the wicket taking as the oppo looked in a touch of trouble until Ansell and Davis combined for Adelaide, with only 2 wickets in hand, and provided a bit of a worry. Both young batsmen seemed very capable with the bat and saw their team too within 2 batting points before the Reverend bowled a quicker one to bowl Davis and us 1 wicket away from victory with 9 over’s to take it. The old man didn’t provide as effective as he would have been in yester-year, while William bowled well at the other end in a brief first spell for the 2’s.
Their dead bat tactic looked to be working and the horrid memories of Waltham X and Northampton Exiles were becoming far too vivid. With 6 over’s left I was bought back on and 5 balls in their skippers half didn’t do it but for the first time all season one of my bouncers was effective in causing him to fall on his own stumps and giving us a well deserved 3rd 30 points on the trot. A resurgence is well and truly in full flow for the 2’s. (Smurf)
