Match report
After an unreliable Potters Bar cancelled at the last minute last week, the Burys latest outfit, the Development XI made their debut against a very youthful Sawbridgeworth outfit. After seeing a wicket concrete hard with a hint of grass and a very quick outfield the old wise skipper chose to insert the oppo thinking conditions would remain excellant for chasing. All of these assumptions about the wicket turned out to be completley incorrect with Joe's second ball shooting along the ground and we began to realise just how unpredictable and low the bounce may become, very St Mary's Lane like. I took first blood bowling opener Wright in the 4th over, however this bought top scorer Guest to the crease, who played some sweetly timed shots and made use of the lightning outfield, picking gaps which guranteed him plenty of 4's in an excellant knock of 65, well supported with the other opener Mann who's 55 took a longer time but provided a base for the team to bat around. The whole bowling unit, including the variation of 3 left armers, bowled excellently keeping runs hard to come by, and very well supported in the field with diving stops all around the outfield, notably our A.N.Other Ben Crilley who's effort at backward point was Rhodes-esque. He took this confidence into his bowling with good lines and lengths and being rewarded with the number 4's scalp. The introduction of the offspinner S.Rider into the attack produced wickets, however this wasnt the veteran Steve, it was the young Sam, who combined flight and variation to take 4 deserved wickets which included a stumping by Ranner in his first game behind the stumps, maintaining a tidy innings for first go. They combined good late running to reach a very good 225-8.
Top tea out of the way we began our reply with Shaggy and Sam opening up, both handling the quicks well to open a stand of 27 before Moss fell victim LBW Spilman. Pete joined his son at the crease and begun the solid base of the chase, however with the ball shooting low he lost Sam and Ashwood in quick succession both to balls hitting the bottom 6th of the stumps. Pete had to retire once reaching 50 (league rules) having thumped 3 sixes in an over into nearby gardens. With the rain looking like it might stop the game short, Geoff and I enjoyed ourselves, sharing 72 with a go down swinging mentality, runs and chances coming in equal measure. We lost our last 4 wickets in the last 5 overs, a good effort to use up all the time we could in the middle and providing everyone the opportunity for at least a chance for batting experience which is the whole point of the league. Finally reaching 185 which was an excellent attempt on a wicket that just got lower and lower as the game went on. So a positive start to the season despite the loss and hopefully with the teams potential a turn around in fortunes in weeks to come.(By Junior Smurph)
