Hertingfordbury CC Friendly XI v County Hall on Sun 22 Aug 2010 at 2.00
Hertingfordbury CC Lost by 63 runs
Match report
A much stronger County Hall than in recent seasons turned up for this year's Rowley Cup match. With no interest from our 1st team members we had the makings of a good 2nd XI side plus Pete Rider (who's technically one of ours via the development XI).
They won the toss, batted and we enjoyed 3 early wickets thanks to good opening spells by Wideload and Father Ted and the bonus of a runout courtesy of Tom Harley. CH's all-first-team middle order then took control with some big hitting. Apart from James & especially Joe, all of the bowlers took some stick.
Fielding however was very good, highlighted by a low catch diving forward at point from Bryden and two massive steeplers to Martin Ambler fielding by the bottom corner of the nets. Fittingly, T Barnaby's brutal knock of 61 was enhanced by a 10 minute chorus of bovine bellowing from the cow field, much to everyone's amusement not least his team mates. The oppo accelerated at the end but we were reasonably satisfied with chasing 6 an over.
The real joy of a Sunday friendly 40 over game is you can take a bit longer over the tea, which was just as well as Nicci Ranner had prepared a wonderful feast.
Bondy & I put on 60 in 15 overs but just as we needed to accelerate I fell victim to a carbon copy runout to last week, trying a crazy single off a shot straight to square leg. Matt had no intention of me ruining a second consecutive Sunday, so stayed put. After that we never really threatened the target, with even Pete struggling to punish the tight bowling.
Only Martin held up the inexorable defeat with a lively 22 against some unnecessarily short quick bowling, late on.
An enjoyable enough affair played in a good spirit, but a pity CH didn't bring the trophy to present, or come for a a beer with us afterwards.
