Hertingfordbury CC Development XI v Wormley on Sun 06 Jun 2010 at 1.30
Hertingfordbury CC Won by 94 Runs

Match report Sorry this has taken a while to put up, apparently A levels are more important...
After OA's cried off their league match for the second time this season, Wormley kindly offered to fill their boots for a friendly home encounter. The weather reports suggested a storm, but as the oppo turned up the sun was out and the humidity was high. Perfect conditions for bowling, but as per usual, don’t know if this was planned by the skipper, I can’t remember the toss result, we ended up in bat. No Sam's this week so Thomas and I took to the middle, and the experiment went well, Thomas playing very patiently and the pair of us incorporating boundaries and plenty of run 2's which weren't our favourite as the sweat took effect. A change of bowling, as it usually seems to do bought about the wicket of Thomas who departed caught very smartly at extra cover after a solid 20 having taken the partnership to 63 in just under 12 hours. The good start wasn’t capitalised on well, Peter joined me and went having forgotten that your front foot is the most important asset when batting at the Bury and being castled by Turnham who was the oppo's best performer with the ball. Gil once again used his eye well to cart the ball around the field in a fast paced 32 before swinging across the line at one too many, a small middle order collapse left us hanging on at 141-7 which didn’t look too promising, well they were chatting about chasing 300...but the score was rectified by an ever entertaining 8th wicket partnership by Jonathon and birthday boy, on debut, Rowland Reeves, their 69 run stand included no less than 14 4's, taking us past 100 in the 34th over, rivalling last week’s run rate. Once Jonny went and Joe followed shortly, suffering the same syndrome as Peter, this is why this teams all about learning, Ollie went in with the order of help Rowland score 4 more runs, and he did blocking the ball leaving Reeves senior to record 51 not out at the end, not bad for someone taking batting lessons half an hour before his innings and who's brother claims has never hit 50 runs in his career, also surely a number 9 club record? if we were into those things of course.
A smashing tea, which included freshly cooked hot chicken and sausages, haven’t experienced that since Southgate so thank you very much.
Thus began out bowling effort, with the comedic value produced by me donning the gloves to keep, at the might of 6ft 5 it was never promising to be dignified and so it wasn’t, but 9 byes in 40 over’s wasn’t quite the run fest that Mr Spong had been expecting when I delivered the news to the Scooby’s on Saturday. Anyway the real thing that matters was the bowling, Joe opened up, and as with week in week out was on the money from the off, finding a good bit of shape through the air and down the hill, but again not being rewarded for a fine opening spell. As if the script is already written Thomas came on and took a wicket courtesy of a Ponting-esque Slip catch from Mr Rider. The run out of Stevenson bought their young skipper to the crease, and here the fizz seemed to disappear out of the game, Thomas and Jonny bowled 3 and 5 respectively as they both finished their spells with excellent figures. There on Dent and Tutin batted sensibly and slowly, however was rather a bit too sensible, test match like in a 40 over’s match was never going to work, causing Ollie to toil from the church end victimless in a spell which deserved wickets as he slowly increases pace and consistency. Tutin reached 50 with 100 still required and tried upping the run rate only to fall victim to Cookie who agreed to turn his arm over which turned into a quite impressive 4 over spell again using the slope effectively to move the ball down the hill. As the final few over’s were bowled they still had 5 boys sat on the sidelines waiting for a bat and it was generally felt that the game would have been a bit more productive if they batsmen had tried to score some more runs which would have given each one the chance to get some time in the middle, which as previously stated is the whole point of these matches, but we won’t focus on that, all our boys got a game so not our issue. The game came to an end as reckless fielding with a dropped catch and 2 overthrows off the final ball gave dent his 50 not out. With 9 boys all experiencing a good game of cricket, which all found enjoyable and productive as a break from the competitive league cricket, and should be a large booster to help us go and give the highly fancied Abbots Langley outfit a good go.
