Aspenden v Hertingfordbury CC Friendly XI on Sun 08 Aug 2010 at 2pm
Hertingfordbury CC Lost by 5 Wickets

Match report The bury's friendly XI took the form of the development team for a visit to the small village of Aspended. The pitch looked like it had potential to break up so the old man won the toss and elected to bat.
The aspendedn bowlers started very very slowly, but still rather steadily providing few difficult scoring opportunities and both were rewarded with a wicket thanks to Sam and mine impatience. Moss and Gil began a rebuilding effort, Gil needing very little time to start finding the boundary in a brief yet entertaining 18 before Ward caught him on the back foot, who then removed Ashwood a few overs later. Moss had slowly clawed his way to 20 with many lives before one fielder finally took the opportunity to catch him on one of his better times shots. This meant at 58-5, a great amount of damage limitation was required. Peter and the skipper took control, both getting thier eyes in and finally producing some good running between the wickets, producing a higher run rate than we'd been going at in a partnership of 70+ runs being ended after 14 overs, in which Peter reached his well deserved, having got through a fierce battle with their skipper, first bury 50. Once Bernard leathered one to long on, unorthodox shots became the order in an attempt to add vital runs, Peter playing shots through fine leg from a foot outside off, and entertainment late on was provided by Rowlad smashing a six 3/4 of the way up a boundary ridinf tree still on the rise, in a shot only his unique batting style can produce, helping us to finish on 158, plenty more than we were looking at 10 overs in.

Martin and Rowland were entrusted with the opening spells, with good tight lines and lenghts, showing that it wasnt just us who found scoring difficult. Martin picking up the first wicket bowling Devanshire. Once Moss replaced
Martin it didnt take long for him to get one through Grace, however for a while this was the last success we had. Potter joined Clifton, and they did as required, kept out anything straight and dispatched the bad balls for boundaries. Pearcey was very unlucy as his spell was going well, and should have deserved a wicket before a loose last over somewhat ruined what would have been superb figures. 18 overs left and they only needed around 50 to win. Team Murphy was employed in a last ditch effort to clasp victory and it was going well, Senior contained and prevented scoring, and i found a way to bowl 3 batsmen in 3 overs. However extras some indifferent fielding and the dangerous potter now past 50 things were looking in trouble, we took them to 6 overs to go but Potter was determined to stop a close finish and knocked off the rest of the runs in 4's and 6's. So a disappointing victory, but for our young side a good learning experience on a difficult track. Aspenden held themselves very well in an extremely friendly encounter, and we look forward to possible future encounters in seasons to come. (Smurf)
