Hertingfordbury CC 2nd XI v Sawbridgeworth IV on Sat 17 May 2008 at 1.30
Hertingfordbury CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Captain Stone was off searching Eastern Europe for some new talent for the 'Bury. Expect to see Ivan, Boris and Vladimir on a teamsheet near you soon.
The captain's baton was therefore in the trusty hands of our Treasurer, Geoff (Your Annual Subs are due NOW) Anderson. The club's double headed coin remained in the UK and Anderson encouraged the oppo skipper to make the wrong call and on a day that threatened rain, 'The Money Man' decided to have a bat.
After our Chairman arrived 15 mins before the scheduled start (something about a 50 mile bike ride in the morning - most people just drive!), Messrs McDowall and Goodwin set about the Sawbo bowlers. Well, McDowall did as Shaggy was back in the hutch 2nd ball.
Dorahy joined the party and after a couple of lusty blows, gave the text book example of how to leave a ball outside off stump...one problem...it was a big inswinger and knocked over all three!
The 'old guard' were therefore at the wicket with only 30 on the board. Some dogged defence and a few scoring shots saw Anderson and McDowall put on 80 odd before Mr Chairman was beaten by a jaffa outside off stump and was busy congratulating the bowler when the keeper stumped him!
Anderson hung around with good support from Brady Jnr and Ives Jnr before falling in the last over. Young Pearcy came out and despatched two consecutive balls to long off to earn an extra two bonus points. 171-7 - our highest total of the season.
Sawbo started in quick fashion as the rain fell. After a quick stoppage there was a 'lightbulb' moment for the 'Ginger Prince' changing into boots with spikes. An extra yd of pace achieved being able to stand. (Note to all parents - please buy all bowlers boots with spikes!). At 40 odd for none, young Risley swooped at Square Leg to run out Chisnall, hitting with only one stump to aim at.
The trojan known as Ives Snr, operating up the hill then beat Winder first ball for pace(?!)and quickly sent the other opener back LBW. 3 down.
Risley & Hampshire showed considerable promise from the top end but need proper boots with spikes - see earlier comments!
Brady then joined the party and soon Sawbo were in a bit of trouble. Pearcey bowled 4 good overs from the Church end and took two wickets - one a steepling c&b, the other courtesy of a cracking catch from Risley.
In the end, a couple of lusty blows from their skipper and the No 10 saw Sawbo home with 16 balls and two wickets to spare.
The future of the Bury is bright which was more than could be said for the weather on the day!
Comrade Stone returns next week...........
