Hertingfordbury CC 2nd XI v St Margaretsbury III on Sat 16 Aug 2008 at 1.00
Hertingfordbury CC Won by 8 wickets

Match report Having spent more time this week looking at the met office website than is healthy for a man of my age, I was relieved that on Friday they changed their mind about the great flood and opted instead for a dry day.
But being both 2nd XI skipper and a Spurs fan I've learned never to take anything for granted in life. So even when rock-bottom St Mags turned up with 4 boys short enough to fail the height restrictions on most theme park rides I was still hoping for a favourable coin toss. Once that was achieved we stuck them in.
Fleabag's opening spell brought him a rare wicket, which doesn’t really reflect how well he's bowled all season. Bernard as usual, beat the bat regularly, but unusually ending up wicketless. He was last seen trudging off to fine leg muttering "there's nothing in this for a seamer". It's taken him 35 years to realise this.
Bryden, freshly laundered from last week’s mudbath took over, turning the ball considerably and causing the batsmen lots of problems. His five-for was well deserved. Fifth Beatle Cozins had his best spell in a long while, conceding only 13 runs from his 6 overs, as did Lurch Brady who picked up a wicket. Kevin, shamefully overlooked by the skipper finally came on in the 39th over and made his displeasure known with the shabby figures of 4-1-3-3. Our fielding was very encouraging with 6 catches. Smurf, Fleabag, and Cowell all took difficult chances and Cozins capped it with a diving effort at full stretch. Ironically Lurch, who now has probably the safest hands in the club was the only exception, spilling a hooked shot right down his throat at square.
All of the oppo’s young bats did extremely well especially Spencer who at 13 held us up for over an hour and displayed superb concentration and technique.
I was now slightly more optimistic with 116 our target. Tea could now be fully enjoyed and what a tea it was! I never witnessed the now legendary Goodwin feast but this was a pretty amazing effort by Jan Ives. I quickly reassessed my batting position (downwards) and got stuck in.
Cowell and Flea opened and got us to 44 before Mike’s luckless batting season continued with a run out. Word is that Cowell was after a ton and didn’t want him nicking too many runs. Doraz came in and helped add 65 as TC was scoring at will. He notched up his first club 50 before hitting the winning runs with an unbeaten 74.
A job well done, but unfortunately our nearest rivals did the same. So it’s off to the fragrant Frogmore next week to keep the pressure up.
