Met Police Bushey II v Hertingfordbury CC 2nd XI on Sat 06 Sep 2008 at 12.30
Hertingfordbury CC Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
A wet, windy morning. After waiting/praying for a call that never came to cancel the match, we trudged off to Bushey.
A rare toss defeat and they put us in on a wicket that resembled the Somme at one end and the Sahara at the other (Their covers leaked).
One last chance for me to do something with the bat this year, and surprisingly, Cowell and I put on 50 for the first wicket at 4 an over. After I was out both Toms became tied down by tight slow bowling. TC went in the 26th for a solid 41. Geoff scooped up a low shooter to be caught at mid wicket when he'd expected it to disappear over the boundary. We struggled for quick runs and despite a useful 32 from Tumble, we limped to 136.
After an excellent tea, which we'll miss next year as the Met are promoted, we opened with the old ball. Will "the beast" Brady wheeled away into the wind and Wideload Pearcey (very pleased that he's still feeling well enough to play), supported very well at the other end. He was unlucky not to take a sharp c&b.
We kept the run rate to 3 an over, and this led to a run-out at 35.
Cowell replaced Pearcey and extracted pace, bounce and movement from a slow pitch. I dropped one edged catch off a snorter that cut back but Tom got his man a few overs later, bowling him with a similar ball, taking me out of the equation.
Hampshire came on next and showed huge improvement in confidence, bowling a good line and length, which reflected in his figures. He also took a steepling catch off William to make it good day for him.
Met Police were slowly easing to victory but one last piece of drama unfolded as Geoff came on for his traditional end of season tweak. His reputation intimidated the batsman into skying his first ball to Will at mid on.
The winning runs came a few balls later. Despite the miserable weather an entertaining game against a decent bunch.
