Tewin v Hertingfordbury CC Friendly XI on Sun 14 Sep 2008 at 1.00
Hertingfordbury CC Won by 1 wicket
Match report
The sun finally shone as the curtain fell on another Bury season. Our old chums Tewin hadn't played us for a while so it was a nice way to finish.
On a wicket so slow you could have bowled and kept to your own deliveries, Tewin started brightly against the generous Smurf & Stone but were reigned in by a tight spell from Wideload at the road end. The slow boys then took over and Reverend Smith struck almost instantly taking both openers in successive overs. Hammy Hamster Bryden (Tales from the Riverbank - stay with me) chipped in, as did Sam, to leave Tewin struggling to last enough time for them to lay tea out. Cooky in only his first outing since June picked up the last 3 at the end. Darbs had gone on a stumping fest. Four to be exact - and took a catch.
We batted for half an hour before tea losing Dolan (who Darbs had found gathering dust in the attic) and Dorahy who was probably thinking of tea, which as it turned out was a splendid affair.
After tea Bryden, Pearcey and Ranner were the only 3 to provide Darbs with any meaningful support. We were cruising to the total when Sam, eager to protect Darbs from the pace attack, turned down a second run. He got nailed lbw just 6 short of the target. There followed the 3 blobs that gave the scorecard such an intriguing look and raised Tewin to hysterical levels. Darbs managed to farm the strike and last boy Cooky managed to hit the winning runs to a highly entertaining game (though not quite in the way we'd planned). An unbeaten 81 and five scalps saw Darbs reach for the beer jug and Nicola for the noise cancelling headphones.
