Welwyn Gdn City IV v Hertingfordbury CC 2nd XI on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1.30

Match report
Prezzo won the toss and put WGC in on what looked a flatish wicket at Welwyn Rec. Ives opened up the hill, into the wind and he and Cowell were impressive in the opening overs. Ives had Nicholson caught by 'Beaker' Blencowe and Cowell had the young #3 caught by a sharp catch at gulley. City struggled to score quickly but a good partnership for the 3rd wicket moved the score forward.
Ives toiled on a blustery day but the old war horse had his reward when Primarolo was sharply taken at silly point by Murphy Snr for 42.
Another cheap wicket went with 'Beaker' taking his first wicket for the 'Bury but City then pressed the accelerator and started to find gaps in the field and the good early work went to waste.
Cowell came back for a 2nd spell and took a further 2 wickets, Russell was finally run out for a patient 58 (fine for Mr Blencowe for dropping the catch AND missing the stumps!) and Ives then wound things up with the last ball to leave the 'Bury having to chase a much larger target than they expected to chase.
Some tight bowling at the start of the 'Bury innings left us 30-3 after 10 overs. Rogers and Cowell both giving catching practice behind the wicket and The Treasurer missing a straight one that didn't get up and was LBW.
Ranner provided good support for Capt Prezzo but departed when he went back instead of forward and was bowled.
A mini colapse saw us slump to 92-8 with 12 overs still remaining. Fine for Brady Jnr for shouldering arms to the off-spinner and being castled! Murhpy Snr (brought in at the last minute) and Prezzo then kept the City bowling at bay earning valuable batting points and steering us to 134-8 at the close.
7 bonus points and a creditable draw against a team who won their first two matches. Good to see a bit of resolve early in the season.
