Match report
ALL GOOD THINGS FOR THOSE WHO WAIT (by King of the Swingers)
The first true summer weather of the year, the field looked a treat and a tea by Marion in store. The makings of a perfect day. Things got better as Radlett won the toss and batted. They were looking comfortable on a typically flat Bury track until a risky single was picked up by Thomas Harley on his senior debut, who threw down the stumps from 25 yards. Conditions still favoured the batters for the next hour until Kevin, chugging away at the pavilion, broke a 60 partnership between top scorer Freeman & Clare, bowling both in quick succession. The run rate plummeted, wickets fell and the complexion of the game turned rapidly around. Smurf found his form again generating swing and bounce and picking up 2 wickets, one an excellent overhead catch by Harley jnr. I came back for a 2nd spell to keep the runs down and we were pleased to have kept them to about 30 runs below what they'd have hoped for, helped in no small part by keen fielding from Harley, Brady and Mark Jones.
Marion's teas then exceeded expectations, the cheese scones & carrot cake worthy of particular mention.
Mells and Mozzer opened for us and things couldn't really have gone much better as they put on 125 for the first wicket with Goodwin posting his first 50 for the club. After Mells was bowled, any glimmer of hope by Radlett was shattered as Simon came to the crease and comfortably started working the bowling into the gaps. With 25 runs to go, Moss snicked one behind for 56, and Geoff joined Simon to see us home, hitting the winning runs with a shot straight out of the Babe Ruth coaching manual. For Bury, a great all round effort.
Comedy moment went to William Brady's unique dive, which saw him do a kind of horizontal shoulder-charge at the ball, allowing it to roll harmlessly by.
