Match report
KING LOUIS GETS HIS DAY IN THE SUN. (by the great man himself).
They've re-laid the pitch at St Edmunds and the Letchworth skipper assured Alex it's been playing better than last year (which is a pretty low base).
Unconvinced, Alex won the toss and fielded. Within 4 balls, Barack Obama's adage about lipstick on pigs rung true as one of Kevin's good length deliveries reared up and struck the skipper on his hand. Smurf's recent control was lacking, as his short length deliveries sat up and were despatched with ease, but he did manage to trap the skipper to a low LBW. Beaker bowled tidily but was unlucky to be the victim of some end-swapping as Kevin came uphill and I was introduced at the top end. The slope and breeze suited me fine as I bagged a wicket in each of my first two overs, two consecutively in the fourth and a final one in the fifth for a career best 6-2-5-5, (3 of which were wides!) Flattering figures, but there has to be some reward for those weeks of slogging away at the Bury.
At the other end Kevin managed to dismiss Collison, the only batsman who posed a real threat amongst a young side. Thomas Harley brimming with confidence from his second run out in 2 games, claimed his first bowling wicket for us, as did Brad Smith, to see off the last man. 101, whilst a low target, wasn't going to be easy on this track.
With tea still 50 minutes away, a difficult spell awaited Moss & Derek. A lively opening attack created plenty of problems, not so much by way of hitting the stumps, more by which part of the anatomy was going to take the next impact from the uneven bounce. To this end, both of our openers played with a fair degree of courage. Derek's height allowed him to get on top of the ball and leave the good delivery until he lost concentration and played around a yorker. Moss's few runs shouldn't be underestimated as more importantly, he took up valuable time blunting their opening attack and supporting Simon. Mr Harley had to resort to some unorthadox stroke play and (shock horror) aerial shots to counter the ridiculous bounce, and his body language betrayed his growing frustration. After Moss holed out, the not-out specialist club was complete as Geoff and Simon saw us home, with Simon completing another 50 off his last ball.
