Hertingfordbury CC Lost by 5 wickets

Match report HEADLINES.....RYMER RETURNS/HARLEY HUMAN AFTER ALL - report by The Treasurer as King Louis was playing with coconuts.

The annual ‘Bury pilgrimage as the Fete was taking place at St Mary’s Lane saw us pitch up at Walkern on a cloudy Saturday afternoon to take on the unbeaten Southgate Compton.

Both Captains looked like they wanted to bowl first as the pitch looked a bit grassy and the ground sloped steeply away on the ‘road’ side. Prezzo duly lost the toss so we had first go.

A steady start from the old guard of Rogers and Melley saw us reach 24 before Delboy succumbed to Rhodes in the 4th of his 24 over spell. Harley then strode to the wicket but was bowled for 14 proving he is not immortal. Anderson, Melley, & The Skip all got in and departed for 14 (the ‘Bury’s new bogey number?) so we were 111 for 4 after 35 overs with Rhodes being supported by Worth who bowled 17 overs himself.

Rymer had sold his children into slavery during the morning to make sure he was there from the start and was joined by the Sorcerer’s Apprentice (Blencowe) and with a few lusty blows, the last 12 overs saw the score reach a respectable 209. Rymer finished 95 n.o. and being fined for two reverse sweeps for 4. The first time this shoddy stroke has been seen in the 2nd XI...there is no place for that in this team!! Beaker finished with 34 – his highest score of the season.

The co-operative effort that provided tea (thanks to Marion again for getting it all ready!) ensured another ‘Bury feast but the plan to fill up the Compton openers with sarnies and cake to slow them down failed miserably as they started with a flourish, helped by some ‘interesting’ fielding!

Compton were always up with the 5 an over rate and it wasn’t until Prezzo’s mystery spin had its first outing of the season did we start to see wickets fall. Some schoolboy running also saw 2 run-outs with Harley Snr having watched Harley Jnr in previous weeks and contributed to the demise of Pallett.

Ives chipped in with a wicket, an excellent catch by Blencowe in the deep and probably the highlight of fielding effort. The low point had to be Rymer’s lob to the keeper from backward point that went 20 yds over his head only for Kev to sweep onto the ball at square leg then show off his footballing skills by kicking the ball 3 times to fine leg. The batsmen would have run about 7 if they hadn’t been rolling around in hysterics. The poor effort in the field saw all of the grown-ups fined £1 each with Rymer having to pay double for the show boating when batting.

A couple of lusty blows at the end from Grayson & Rhodes (he got 24 to match the number of overs he bowled!) saw Compton home with 3 overs to spare.

15 points for the draw sees us in mid table with Reed away next week.
