Hertingfordbury CC 2nd XI v North Mymms IV on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 1.30
Hertingfordbury CC Won by 9 wickets

Match report LAZING ON A SUNNY AFTERNOON (By Kinks Louis).
A tortoise takes a wrong turn home and gets mugged by a gang of snails. He goes to the police who ask him if he got a look at his assailants. "I don't know" says the tortoise, "it all happened so fast".
Such was the atmosphere as table-proppers N.Mymms came to the field of dreams (very appropriate today). Our hopes of an easy win were challenged by a constantly changing team sheet that saw us lose Cowell, Spong & Rogers to the 1s.
The winless visitors won the toss and amazingly chose to bat. Despite a weakened bowling attack we were confident of keeping them quiet, but were helped in no small part by openers who had both decided to anchor the innings.
This gave us rather flattering figures but also little opportunities for wickets, the 3-4 chances coming our way off myself & Beaker being spilled or missed.
The runs crawled along at under 2 an over until drinks, when Pearcey got our first wicket, bowling Tinnel one ball after the break. His tight spell was followed by Smurf, who's first delivery struck other opener Topham where the sun don't shine. After a 5 minute break for the unfortunate batsman to recover his breath, Smurf produced possibly his best bowling of the season, dismissing 3 batsmen to catches (I'm not bitter).
I was retired potless after 16 overs, and replaced by Tom Harley who's confidence is improving rapidly each week. He was rewarded with one of two scalps when Topham tried to pull him through mid-wicket and was caught by an amazing diving effort by Geoff (no, I'm really not bitter). His 2nd should have come when the ball looped over Simon's head, but despite his dad getting both hands on it at full stretch, he palmed it to the ground. It came instead when one of their younger batsmen scooped a sweep up for an easy high catch for Alex behind the stumps.
The final pairing included Jordy Carter, looking and batting spookily like an exact scale replica of brother Rhys. His elegant cover drives stood him way out from his team mates but fortunately for us he's not yet big enough to hit the ball that far
Matt Hampshire was unlucky to be replaced after only two overs as I was brought back at the church end to try to prevent a late flurry of runs, although nothing in our visitor's demeanour suggested otherwise. Only 2 runs followed and another dropped catch to make me feel better.
After a massive Dwyer tea, Ross and Geoff, in his first opening slot in living memory, set off at the same soporific rate as N.Mymms, lending weight to the theory that there was something in the air that day. Especially as news was coming from the 1s at Hertford of a similarly dull encounter.
The boys finally accelerated after drinks to bring the target closer. Geoff went to a catch at deep square before Alex joined Tumble to steer us home.
This leaves us 7th, with 3rd place a genuine prospect. Cheshunt next week is the last of the lower-placed opposition before the real dogfight for promotion begins.
