Hertingfordbury CC Friendly XI v Martin Richards XI on Sun 21 Jun 2009 at 2PM
Hertingfordbury CC Won by 8 runs
Match report
(By the coconut shy King Louis).
A day to remind us of why we play and make us wonder why we don't play more on Sundays.
Short of 'Bury players I called on a few Shenfield mates to complete the side against a Social XI put together by another village resident Martin Richards.
We were kindly asked to bat, and our guest contingent made up most of the runs with Matt Keane and Pete Rider putting on 119, Pete then having the rare enjoyment of batting with his 15yr old son Sam. He brought up his ton with a six followed by 2 more and was somewhat miffed that I then declared, depriving him of a Garfield Sobers moment.
The key to getting this fixture going was the promise that the opposition wanted to make a family day out of this, with a tea to match. What followed was of legendary size and quality and will go down as one of the great 'Bury feasts. (Where were you Guntrip?). The 20 over deadline was set back 15 minutes to allow some extra scoffing time.
It was then the plan to allow our youth contingent to bowl us to victory.
The openers got off to a flyer putting on 53 before Jo Crilley got one to move away and offer William a simple caught behind. Thomas Harley then starred, picking up 4 wickets with intelligent well-flighted bowling. Hamps supported well with only 15 runs and a wicket coming from his first 5 overs, before a loose 6th spoilt his figures a bit.
The visitors needed 100 by the 20 over mark and were always up with the rate, achieving 200-7 with 10 overs to go.
We wanted them to work for their winning runs so it was time for the old boys. Andy Hayes closed up one end allowing myself to pick up 3 wickets at the other, and deny them victory by 9 runs.
A perfectly balanced-game, glorious weather, good company and an amazing tea. It doesn't get any better. Thanks also to Geoff for turning up to umpire for the innings, in return for a good few slices of cake.
