Hertingfordbury CC 2nd XI v Sandridge II on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1pm
Hertingfordbury CC Won 101 runs.

Match report "We are top of the league, say we are top of the league!" Apologies for the football style outburst, but such early season joy is rarely found for the 2's. Normally slow starters, we carried on from last weeks success and jumped to number 1 in Div. 11. Mainly thanks to stand-out performances from Spong and Harley.
Having seen last weeks scores, both captains knew a lot could rely on the toss, so duly Bernard had no luck with the coin and we were inserted. A slow start courtesy of Ranner forgetting you can't hook off your ankles and Thomas receiving a vicous leg cutter down the hill to peg back his off stump, was slowly counteracted by Pete and Rhys' partnership, as both did the correct work to get in on a tricky and slow surface. Pete's LBW may have been cause for disagreement between himself and Marcus, but it did bring high scorer Spong to the crease. In between back stretches he hit his straps, and with Rhys cleverly working the ball around in the big out field, Dominic bullied Sandridge into opening up the field and runs became easier to come by. A 3 wicket collapse orchestrated by the Murphy family put us on the rocks when we were still only on 70, but Rob helped Dominic rebuild with a very valuable 18. As Dominic passed a thoroughly deserved and chance-less 50 he fell, but by then we were well into batting points territory and the lower order scampered some extra runs, as Sandridge looked deflated, to take us to a very competitive 152-9.

A splendid debut tea by Pauline Skuce was enjoyed by all as we set about making sure we capitalised on our strong half-time position.

The old ball was taken, and from then on we never looked back. Marcus "I enjoy the game but I'm not good at it" Smith took the first wicket with a lovely flighted delivery which settled him down into a glorious 10 over spell of controlled bowling, and his figures speak for themselves. But he was still playing second fiddle, as not for the first time, a Harley took the limelight. This time with the ball. Thomas, using intelligence as-well as skill, used field placements and tight lines to put the batsmen under pressure from the off, extracting big turn at times down the hill he trapped many batsmen in the crease, none of who could put up any resistance of note. Notable dismissals from his, best ever figures, 7-30 included a sharp turner to their leftie number 6 who played down the leg stump line of the ball, to see it turn and remove the bail from the off stump, and Rhys topping off a good all round day with a stumping, in which the batsman made no attempt to regain his ground after we all celebrated the dismissal about 5 seconds before Rhys managed to collect the ball and eventually stump the stranded man. As with last week we held every catch that came our way, Ranner making a catch look a very painful affair, as he tumbled to his right as if he'd just been shot in the knee. We managed to bowl Sandridge out for 51 giving us a 101 run victory, and with all 3 disciplines being executed so well in the early season, there's no reason why we can't improve more and really make a push for table topping rights this year.

EDITOR'S PS: 3 LBWs per side. Although not a great comment on our footwork, a credit to both teams for playing and umpiring in the right spirit. As they say, you've got to give some to get some.
